INGREDIENTS
- 2 cups of pre-cooked cornmeal (also known as masarepa)
- 2 cups of warm water
- 1 teaspoon of salt
- 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil
- Filling of your choice (such as cheese, meat, avocado, or black beans)
RECIPE
- In a large bowl, mix together the pre-cooked cornmeal, warm water, salt, and vegetable oil until a smooth dough forms. Knead the dough for a few minutes until it is soft and pliable.
- Divide the dough into 8-10 equal pieces and roll each piece into a ball.
- Flatten each ball into a disk that is about 1/2 inch thick.
- Heat a non-stick skillet or griddle over medium heat.
- Place the arepas on the skillet or griddle and cook them for 5-7 minutes on each side until they are golden brown and slightly crispy.
- Once the arepas are cooked, use a sharp knife to slice them in half, creating a pocket for the filling.
- Stuff each arepa with the filling of your choice, such as cheese, meat, avocado, or black beans.
- Serve the arepas hot and enjoy!
